Bethsaida & Capernaum

Leaving Kursi we traveled to ancient ruins of Bethsaida (click).  The disciples Peter, Andrew and Philip came from this town.

Traveling west from Bethsaida along the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee we stopped to see Capernaum (click).  From this community Jesus focused his Galilean ministry.  It is also the place where archaeologists have concluded that one house in the village was venerated as the house of Peter the fisherman as early as the mid 1st century.

In the Byzantine era there was a church built over the site in order to preserve it's location and in 1990 another church was built over the site by the Franciscan Order of the Roman Catholic Church.  It is the Franciscans who maintain and preserve many of the Christian sites in the Holy Land.  They have been commissioned by the church to be the custodians of these holy sites (Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land (click)).
